In those days, Enia did the weekend shift, Friday to Sunday morning in a sequence of three, 11 hour workdays, but gave it up when she was heavily pregnant.
These days her husband, Jerry is the main breadwinner having clocked up over nine years of working at the plant. In 2014 Jerry was working in what they called the bodyshop, where his job is to deliver, on request, different unpainted car components from stores onto a jig that transferred them through a gate to a robot that assembles them on the line. Jobs in the 24/7 BMW operation are keenly sought and competitive, and Jerry is well satisfied with his status as a skilled and valued worker. That said he complains that despite his efforts, he remains a short-term contractor subject to regular renewal of his term through an external company known as GI recruitment,10 who signed him up on his Portuguese passport. Many other workers, including the 50 or so Timorese employed by the plant find themselves in this situation. The contractual arrangement means that their base wages are generally higher, earning up to £9 per hour, than workers in restaurants or housekeeping. But if you canât secure a direct labour contract with BMW, you wonât get appointed to one of seven official grades of employment, and that means youâre not eligible for pay rises, promotions or the full suite of employment benefits. External contractors get four weeks holiday leave and nothing else. Still for Enia and Jerry the work has given them a stability and comparative prosperity in Oxford that has enabled them to build a financial foundation for their growing family.
